Game Development – Kenya, East Africa & beyond
Game development, as exciting as the end products may be, remains rather unexploited in Kenya and the East Africa region in general. While on one side this results from an inadequacy of skills, low corporate demand for games as part of their marketing and engagement efforts remains a key factor. I mean, let’s be honest, as much as developers develop games as a hobby or out of the in-born passion, they love and need money too!
Nevertheless, the situation is not hopeless as we already have quite a good number of established game developers with quite a number of products to show for it. This covers both in-house projects and projects undertaken for various clients, on various platforms such as HTML games (web-based), Android games, iOS games, social media games among others.

Basically, game development consists of 5 steps as listed below
- Establish the type of game you want to make (i.e. a platformer, shooter, RPG); this will depend on among others the target audience
- Come up with a budget.
- Establish the length of the game depending on the scope
- Come up with the basic plot.
- Know your skill level or at least the skill level desired and hire accordingly
